I have both this lens and Canon 50mm 1:1.2 L. After almost a month since I received Zeiss 50mm f1.4 Planar, I now confidently say that this lens is sharper than Canon at F1.4. And it is indeed an excellent lens for portraiture.

Very nice lens, although a bit of challenging to use when it is wide open. Very sharp at f5.6, a kind of soft at f1.4. Need practice to improve the image quality at wide open. It is very compact lens and the build quality is excellent. very good for walk around purpose. Considering the price, I give it a 5-star rating.

I bought this to use it mostly for video on my A7sii. I love the manual focus and the build. It feels strong and heavy, how a real lens should feel

I've had this lens for awhile now. Not as good as I expected from Zeiss. Possibly I received a bad or poorly calibrated unit. Most of the Zeiss lenses I have rented will go to the infinity mark and truly be in focus. This unit can never be used wide open, it must be backed down to make focus, and even then not sharp at any F stop. I have taken some very nice photo's with this lens. It really shines as a "nifty fifty". Portraiture and still work are best. Not very good for video.
