The Vanguard Endeavor ED II 10x42 is an all-around great pair of binoculars, and a great option if the excellent Vortex Viper HD 8x42 is just outside of your price range. However, it has some downsides compared to the Viper, namely some odd green fringing when used in very bright conditions and a focus knob that can be a bit sticky at points. Optics seem very clear. However, to mount on a tripod, the forward mounting of the 1/4 x 24 attachement hole, is so far forward that the weight of the binos is far behind the center of balance and that weight wants to pull them to point up. Also, the diopter locking ring doesnt lock the adjustment. I think that I will be able to adapt to both these minor problems.

My normal bins that I use are Leica 8 X 42s, which cost about $2400. So, that is a pretty high standard. But, I wanted some 10X powered bins, and I did not want to spend so much money. I am very happy. I used them for the Christmas Bird Count and they were excellent. One very irksome feature was the eyepiece covers for the large lens ends. They fell off immediately and do not want to stay on. This is a common problem with many spotting scopes, bins, and camera lens, so it was not a complete surprise, but I would think that companies would finally come up with a working solution.

My only complaint is the protective lens caps do not fit real well. The rubber is too soft/stretchy

You can tell those who don't know binoculars when they write reviews of these such as "Pretty decent binocular for the price. Could be better but not for the money." Truth is these binoculars are spectacular and clearly a top alpha binocular comparable or better than my Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, Nikon HG and other glass in terms of the view presented. The price is achieved by having them assembled in China which shows only in one important regard: focusing is a bit spongy and stiff, but you don't have to do much of it because stop to stop takes so little turning. It is no Nikon HG in this regard, but neither are the Swarovski. You get used to it. The view is brilliant, contrasty, very sharp, wide angle and sharp edge to edge -- hard to beat. Indeed, dazzling and the price is a real delight as well.
