The biblical story of Moses (Charlton Heston) leading the Hebrews out of bondage in Egypt and eventually receiving the law of God in the form of the Ten Commandments on two stone tablets after wandering forty-years in the dessert is told in this epic Cecil B. DeMille, a remake of his own 1923 film. The 4K Ultra HD disc is taken from the same gorgeous 2010 restoration as previously released on Blu-ray, here showing even more detail and sheen.

Ten Commandments was a slightly charming but very average/status quo rendition of the timeless Bible story. Especially in the shadow of the much better Prince of Egypt, this movie falls far short. While OK for the very young crowd, maybe 5-7, this movie seems to offer nothing special outside of the events of the story itself. The animation seems very run-of-the-mill, and the production offers very little in terms of a fresh take on the story. Relatively accurate to the scriptures, the movie is a competent telling of the events of Exodus at best. The Ten Commandments, in my opinion, seems to be the uninspired product of of a studio that felt a computer-animated version of the story was necessary to fill a niche in the direct-to-DVD market.

Simply put, they don’t make ’em like this anymore. This was back in the day when studios were trying to “Wow” audiences with the magic of movies. We, as moviegoers, aren’t that impressed by things like this nowadays. If the Blu-ray from 2011 is still in your collection, there’s really no need to upgrade. This is simply a re-packaging of what’s already been released. Admittedly, you can’t go wrong with this one.
